Dallas & Tanya Low | Rami & Nathan Henry | Joel Mayer
Simple Truth describes themselves as "a progressive sibling
vocal group that brings new insight and perspective into the field
of Christian music and faith. The music speaks boldly of God's Kingdom
and our place inside of it." Their sound is considered Progressive
Pop
original, scripture-based songs, tight harmonies, piano
with many creative twists.
In 2001, I produced their album Hear The Word as well as
played electric and acoustic guitars on many of their songs. Im
still very proud of this album as a piece of work that stands up
over time. Darren Rahn from Denver co-produced this record with
me. Darren does fine work, and has produced CDs for many Colorado
artists. He is now embarking on his own solo smooth jazz career.
The song "Redeemed" is one of the more inspired
pieces on this album. On the morning we recorded it, there was a
real sense of seriousness as we sat down to start our sessions for
that day. Dallas Low led us all in a time of prayer and worship
before we started recording it. Immediately after the musicians
took there places, the song was done in one take without any punches
or fixes of any kind. Of course, the vocals were done later, but
the basic foundation and vibe for the song was one of those magic
moments in the studio where everything just fell together musically,
emotionally and spiritually. Darren Rahn came up with beautiful
string arrangements for many songs on the album, "Redeemed"
being one of them. James Hoskins was the celist on the record and
Frank Lynn played the violin. Taylor Mesple played penny whistle.
I feel that "Redeemed" powerfully and soulfully captures
a spirit of seeking God.
The title cut song "Hear the Word" went through
many musical changes and was almost completely re-written from the
original recording sessions to what you hear now. One of the things
that really inspired the direction of the song was James Hoskins
playing the Gadoulka. James has been involved with Bulgarian music
for several years. I suggested that we improv some Gadoulka lines
in the key of A as an intro for the song, so I had him do six or
seven takes and then spliced them together. The inspirations from
those sounds really created not only a great mood for the song but
a definitive mood for the entire album.
I also got a chance to do some nice nylon string guitar with my
beloved Manual Contreras flamenco guitar.
I really like the programming that Darren Rahn did on "Hear
The Word" both with keyboards and drum loops. Darrens
brother Jason played trumpet. I got to play both Hammond B3 and
Wurlitzer as well.
Another aspect of working with Simple Truth that I really enjoyed
was the wonderful rhythm section of Brian Mason on drums and percussion.
Matt Puccini was on bass.
Although no longer together, band members are staying active in
conveying Gods truth in the communities in which they live.
Dallas & Tanya have recently formed a ministry called Beggars
& Bread. The ministry
uses music and teaching to motivate and equip the church to reach
the lost.
Joel Mayer married in May of 2004. While working at a printing
company, Joel is also drumming for his local church, Living Way
Fellowship. He plays drums for Rami on her solo performances and
runs sound for concerts as well.
Rami is on the same worship team as Joel at their church playing
keyboards and singing.
Nathan works as a chemist in downtown Denver and is one of two
lead worshippers at Living Way Fellowship, fully in charge of Choir,
leading the Saturday night worship team on acoustic guitar and often
covering the Sunday morning worship leader.
